Civil rights further eroded with new 26-County Justice Bill. Statement by Republican Sinn Fiin Vice President Des Dalton The 26-County Justice Bill, which was signed into law on May 9 marks yet a further erosion of civil rights in the 26-County state. Already the 26-County Administration has at its disposal a raft of some of the most draconian legislation in Western Europe, including the infamous Offences Against the State Act, as well as a non-jury Special Criminal Court. The full weight of this repressive legislation, as well as the non-jury special court have been used against Irish Republicans over many decades, as indeed it is likely to be in the future. We note the opposition of the Irish Council for Civil Liberties and the view of the Irish Human Rights Commission which said the new legislation presented a “a danger of injustice”.
