US officials anti-Cuban Government tirade disrupted and abandoned.
30/04/07
Members of éirígí, the Communist Party of Ireland, Cuba Support Group Ireland and others today disrupted a lecture to be given at the School of Politics, UCD, Dublin, by Caleb McCarry, the Bush Administration’s "Cuba Transition Coordinator". As such, his primary motive is the undermining and removal of the Cuban Government from power, and its replacement by a Government that would serve the interests of the US and the neo-liberal agenda. The position of ‘Cuba transition Co-ordinator’ developed out of the ‘Commission for Assistance to a Free Cuba’ which is widely known to be directed by the CIA. His mission is described by the Cuban government as "part of a broader U.S. 'plan for Cuba's annexation.'"
Previous CIA funded operations against Cuba have resulted in attacks from both sea and air, attempted invasion, acts of sabotage against industrial installations, the use of biological warfare through the introduction of Dengue Fever, the bombing of a Cuban passenger jet resulting in the deaths of 73 people, and a series of bombing campaigns, most recently during the late 1990’s when a number of hotels were bombed. The US continues to harbour and fund the perpetrators of these actions.
Up to 25 protestors had been waiting to confront McCarry as he entered The School of Politics where the lecture was intended to take place. The meeting was relocated to another venue by its organisers in an attempt to avoid the assembled protestors. However, protestors succeeded in gaining access to the meeting. McCarry was prevented from giving his address, and the meeting was subsequently abandoned.
Speaking after today’s protest, éirígí spokesperson Daithí Mac An Mhaistír stated:
‘Today’s action was necessary, as the subversion planned by McCarry and the CIA must not and cannot go unchallenged. What they have planned for Cuba is very much removed from the ’democracy’ and ‘freedom’, they pontificate about.
‘The ‘Commission for Assistance to a Free Cuba’ holds out only the same prospect as that which befell Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Chile, Guatemala and indeed, every other country that has ever chosen sovereignty and independence over subservience to the interests of the United States.
