Major Randolph Cabangbang said army Sergeant Alberto Baludoya was driving his motorcycle when undetermined numbers of rebels stopped him in a remote village in Cateel town in Davao Oriental province, 985 kilometres south of Manila, on April 13. Cabangbang said military had no information on what happened to the abducted army officer but expressed confidence he is still alive. 'They might be planning to use him to bargain for something,' he said. 'Maybe they would use him to pressure us to stop the intensified operations against them.' Communist rebels have vowed to intensified attacks against the government of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, amid persistent calls for her to step down due to accusations of rigging the 2004 presidential elections. Communist rebels have been fighting the government since the late 1960s, making the movement one of the longest-running leftist insurgencies in Asia. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
