QUESTIONS ABOUND AS NEW HEAD SPOOK TAKES OFFICE
'One man undoubtedly will have knowledge of the identity of many of
the perpetrators of Ireland's unsolved murders. That man is MI5s new
chief and he is not talking. If 'Bob' really is such 'a good egg'
he should demonstrate forcefully his commitment to fighting terrorism
and supporting democracy and the rule of law'
Jonathan ('Call me Bob') Evans, at present the deputy director-general
of MI 5 takes office today. He replaces Dame Eliza Manningham-Buller,
who is retiring after five years at the head of the service.
The jounalistic 'spook groupies' of the British media have highlighted
Evans role as a "well known counter-terrorism expert at the forefront
of countering the terror threat in the wake of the 9/11 attacks in
the United States in 2001 and the July 7 Tube bombings in London in
2005".
Little is said however of Evans links to a less savoury period in
British Intelligence history, the development and expansion of what
became an increasingly 'dirty war' in Ireland from 1970 - 90. Many
innocent people subsequently lost their lives at the hands of murder
gangs directed by the Military Intelligence operation of which Evans
was reputedly a part.
Sir John Stevens, Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service,
gave the first official - albeit limited - description of the British
Army's Force Research Unit (FRU) which was the main clearing house
for this campaign of murder. Interestingly, MI5 are scrabbling to
recover evidence and documents gathered by Stevens and in its criminal
desperation to cover its tracks the Intelligence service is already
reported to have shredded much incriminating material.
Of course one of the main beneficiaries of any cover-up will be Britain's
news head spook who has everything to gain from ensuring potentially
grubby episodes from his Ulster sojourn are not aired publicly.
As Evans moves on to greater things annoying echoes from the past
will not disappear. Relatives of those murdered in bombing and shootings
attributed to the FRU and the State-sanctioned loyalist murder gangs
it ran are increasingly vociferous in their call for justice.
Not surprisingly the relatives of those killed in the Monaghan and
Dublin bombings, the Seamus Ludlow killing, the appalling Finucane
and Nelson lawyer murders and many more cannot expect much support
from the British State as they strive for justice. However, perhaps
the most appalling travesty is the manner in which all those striving
for justice have been let down by the Irish State and successive craven
governments.
One man undoubtedly will have knowledge of the identity of many of
the perpetrators of Ireland's unsolved murders. That man is MI5s new
chief and he is not talking. If 'Bob' really is such 'a good egg'
he should demonstrate forcefully his commitment to fighting terrorism
and supporting democracy and the rule of law. He should switch off
the shredders in Thames House and open the files on Britain's Dirty
war in Ireland.
