Hundreds of thousands of workers went on strike in the southern Spanish
province of Cadiz on Wednesday, unions said, to show support for employees
of bankrupt U.S. auto parts supplier Delphi Corporation.
Delphi said in February it would close its Cadiz plant leaving 1,600
workers without jobs. Unions estimate the closure will affect up to
another 4,000 related jobs in the region.
Industrial estates in the area were closed and public buses were running
minimal services, but the day had so far had passed without incident, a
government representive in Cadiz said.
Unions have called on around 800,000 workers in industry and transport to
join in the general strike. Neither union nor government representatives
could say how many had participated.
Workers at the plant have led many demonstrations since Delphi announced
the closure, and have triggered massive public support in the area once
famous for its ship-building and fishing industries but now more dependent
on tourism.
More than 50,000 people marched through Cadiz in protest at the job cuts
on March 1, including workers at plane parts firm Airbus (EAD.PA: Quote,
Profile, Research) and the bishop of Cadiz and Ceuta, while the city's
fire engines set off sirens in support.
Delphi has said it will pay $70 million in severance pay to workers in its
Spanish unit.
