US Hostility is Over Oil, says Venezuela's Chavez
CARACAS, February 19-Venezuela's oil and Washington's desire to control it is the cause of escalating US hostility towards Venezuela, warned President Hugo Chavez on Sunday.
Speaking on his weekly "Alo Presidente" television and radio program, Chavez noted that the White House is going to great lengths to try and destabilize Venezuela. "They are spending a lot of money here, trying to buy traitors," said the charismatic leader.
Chavez referred to recent statements by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice who accused his government of being a problem for the region and who voiced her support of a transit strike, reported Prensa Latina.
However, Chavez said it is really the process of Latin American integration with concrete projects like the gas pipeline from Venezuela to Brazil, Bolivia and Argentina that really bothers Washington.
The Venezuelan president pointed out that the US had considered Venezuela's gas reserves -one of the largest in the world- as its own and was preparing to exploit it.
"That is one of their problems -said the president-, they are running out of oil because they are wasteful consumers."
"The bottom line is that they want the oil, which they were receiving virtually free, and they also had the gas under their control and planned to take it," he added.
Chavez predicted that this would be a difficult year for his country, due to presidential elections in December, but assured that any and all ploys by the United States would be defeated.
