Support the Iraq Freedom Congress!
The Communist Leauge is proud to announce its support for and affiliation with the Iraq Freedom Congress. The IFC is a revolutionary democratic movement fighting for an independent, democratic and secular Iraq. The IFC has the support of the independent working people's organizations inside the country, including the Basra Oil Workers Union, General Federation of Teachers, General Federation of Iraqi Trade Unions and the Federation of Workers' Councils and Unions of Iraq. Comrades, brothers and sisters!
When the Iraq Freedom Congress was formed in March 2005, we hailed its formation as a step forward in the struggle for an independent, democratic, secular and non-ethnic (that is, not dominated by one or another ethnic group) republic. At the time, we wrote:
“The Iraq Freedom Congress represents a revolutionary democratic alternative to both the national socialists and Islamic fundamentalists of the so-called ‘resistance’ and the puppet National Assembly hiding in Baghdad’s ‘green zone.’
“We actively encourage all those who support the goal of a democratic, secular and non-ethnic Iraq to check out the IFC and join its struggle.” (“Iraq Freedom Congress Launched,” Working People’s Advocate, Vol. 1, No. 6, April 2005)
We believe this statement is still correct today. Moreover, we believe that the events of the past year have shown that the IFC represents the only real alternative and vehicle that can keep Iraq from descending into civil war and communal slaughter.
Through the organizing work of the Federation of Workers’ Councils and Unions in Iraq, the IFC has available the only basis on which to establish a new republic that is not a creature of either the imperialist powers or fundamentalist clerics — preferably a democratic republic based on the Workers’ Councils, where the instruments of the economy are democratically controlled by working people themselves.
The Communist League, on behalf of its members and supporters, both inside the United States and abroad, is proud to declare its support for the work and aims of the IFC, and pledges to do everything we can to promote the Congress and bring its message to workers and democratically-minded people.
As an organization based mainly in the U.S., we believe we have a special responsibility when working as a part of the IFC. As working people living inside the country whose government has invaded and occupied yours, it is our responsibility to take the message of the IFC to those within the U.S. who have opposed this war — which is, you will be pleased to hear, a majority of the population.
We support the unconditional, immediate withdrawal from Iraq of all imperialist-led occupation forces, their armed mercenaries and the super-exploiters who seek their fortunes in “reconstruction.” Only through their withdrawal can real, productive, meaningful reconstruction take place in Iraq.
Only through their withdrawal can the importance and perceived power of the reactionary “resistance,” religious fundamentalists and ethnic separatists wither away and, ultimately, disappear.
Historical experience has demonstrated most clearly that only working people, organized to fight for their own rights and common interests, can bring about progressive change. This is also being demonstrated in Iraq through the failure of the capitalists (domestic and imperialist), and their “middle class” managers, professionals, hired intellectuals (religious and “secular”) and other lieutenants.
Comrades, brothers and sisters!
The key to your freedom and liberation is in your hands. Only you can win that battle. And we are honored to be able to stand with you through the organization of the Iraq Freedom Congress.
In unity for liberation,
Miles, for the League (IWPA)
