Worldwide Closure Demands for US Prison in Cuba Increase
Havana, Feb 21 (AIN) Heads of government, politicians, international media and intellectuals around the world have joined their voices to demand the closing of the US prison on the illegally occupied territory of Guantanamo, Cuba.
According to The New York Times, the United States should shut down the Guantanamo Bay detention center in the face the mounting international calls for Washington to close the prison, reported French news agency AFP.
Likewise, in Brussels, the president European parliament, Rene van der Linden, said he fully agreed with the recent report on the issue by a panel of five UN experts, reported Spanish news agency ANSA.
In related news, EFE reported that the British minister for Northern Ireland, Peter Hain, called for the US to close the prison camp. While Italian deputy leader and foreign relations minister, Gianfranco Fini, said the prison in Guantanamo Bay is an anomaly.
In a front page article, London?s The Independent daily, Archbishop John Sentamu, the second highest official of the Anglican church, demanded the immediate closure of the detention center and said the US government is flaunting international law.
