Some interesting figures from this months village mag on homlessness, provided by the simon community.
55 homeless people died under the simon communities care in 2006. (25 in Cork, 18 in Dublin, 4 in Dundalk and 8 in Galway).
The average age of those who died was 42 - half the average life expectancy of the average Irish person of 78.
The simon community say they deal with roughly one tenth of all homeless people in ireland. They do not have figures for the number dead under the care of other organizations - if any.
The SC is aware of 3,346 homeless, or at risk of homelessness througout the republic. The government say there are 2,399 homeless people.
So if I could, that would be 10*55, equals 550 homeless people who have died. That might be inaccuarate I dont know.
But if so, thats 550 people who died, in one year, at an average age of 42, due to homelessness and related conditions. And 42 is the middle number, the average - so youd have god knows how many in their 20s 30s or even teens who have died.
2200 people in 4 years. Approximates of course.
Celtic tiger?
Thats also 1.5 persons per day.
