Last night the Basque group ETA called off its 15 month ceasefire. I support the ETA and their decision to call off their ceasefire, because of the Spanish governments lies to them. Does anyone think this decision will have any affect in Northern Ireland, where links between ETA and IRA are very strong.

I dont see this having much impact in Ireland or for the Basque struggle, the bomb is not the way to go presently. It will only isolate them further.

A few simple gestures from the Spanish government such as legalising Batauna would probably have prevented this from happening. I wouldnt be suprised if their is a split within ETA in the coming year as it seems there is two competing camps and this latest break in the ceasefire may just be to keep the more militant section on board as also to gain a better negotiating posistion similar to when the provos broke their first ceasefire.

I disagree with ETA's decision to end their ceasefire...
For ETA to ever be successful, or to fulfill their aims they need the support of the people, support I believe does not exist even in the Basque region as much as ETA like to believe...
I agree with the reply that it will only further isolate ETA and their followers as well as their quest for taking their struggle to the next stage, politics and democratic strides, rather than violence...
As for the decision having an affect on the Peace Process here ? no way, of course not ! Sinn Fein, i.e Adams and Mc Guinness have led numerous delegations to the Basque region in recent years advising ETA on the need to turn away from violence, the Sinn Fein veterans being proof that an armed campaign of 30 years brought little rewards...
