Anyway whats the general consensus on reports like this? Is a radical edge welcomed these days or should more pacifist means persued to achieve change? Hey welcome back posting Conor I suppose it depends on the objectives which tactics and strategy should be used. I certainly wouldnt rule out some direct action myself as a potential tactic. Infact id welcome it at this point in some instances. It must be remembered that we are fighting the dominant system and the capitalist class. They use violence all the time to enforce their ideology of private ownership. Police stations in every town, prisons and behind the scenes, the military. Things that we take for granted like people being arrested for 'theift' or not paying a fine - are infact imprisoned and implemented through a mass network of violence and physical force. The state legitimates its control over a given area or population through the use of violence. 'Violence' is the mandate, the legitimator. I see no reason why it would be wrong to meet this violence with our own. From a strategic point of view maybe, but not in principle. I honestly dont know what the future conditions might bring. A small group of people taking direct action could radicalize people by showing initiative and leadership. At the same time, it could subvert popular action. There's always that balance.

I think the French Government are obviously embarking on a campaign to try and demonise the left before they gain any strength (who might possibly gain strength because of the capitalist recession and failings. This has been predicted to happen in many countries). As I think C1916 was also saying, this is a way of legitamising violence by Government forces. If enough of the public believe the 'violent left' to be violent scumbags with no cause then the public (or a respectable minority) will support the Government's right to use violence against the left.
It would be wise of those on the left to start to peacefully organise, educate and promote socialism but I'm sure that will be met by a serious fight by the Government.
The French Government also have (on top of police, military etcetera) hired thugs called the Gendamarie. Although part of the police force (I think) they are basically knuckle-draggers who go around with battons and savage dogs and beat up anyone who steps of line.
