Perhaps we could debate this. I made this statement in an earlier post and it got me thinking. What are people's thoughts on this? "where there is no over-class there is no under-class." My basic theory here is that there is a certain amount of wealth in any society or economy. Most (usually around 80% - 90%) belongs to the wealthy(usually 1% of the population who own the telecommunications, waste, media, automobile industries), the rest (9% - 19%) belongs to the working class and the last 1% perhaps belongs to the lumpen-proletariat (such as the homeless). If the 90% were to be spread among the majority this would dismantle the wealthy and the lumpen-proletariat leaving only the majority. Would this be a fair assumption? What are people's takes on this - and please be brutal when de-constructing my argument if you would

Yeah I think it sounds ok. Thats generally what we want to do isnt it.
Though it sounds a little forced. Would the wealth be like 'equally' distributed amongst the majority?
This is the sort of thing that happens in the USSR, Cuba etc - where the state actively "enforces" equality on people and society, telling people how much they recieve in wages, or how much property they should have etc.
I personally dont think socialism should be looked at as economic 'equality'. Socialism shouldnt be a society where we are all like ants, or conscripts in uniform. Equality in any shape is impossible. In a socialist society, I think if a person wants to live in a mansion, they can. If a person desires a luxury car, there should be nothing preventing them getting one constructed.
But i think Socialism is a system which puts people is a particular set of conditions so that they do not desire, or seek, material wealth like this. But that the material wealth is there for them to express their individuality to the fullest, how they see fit.
Nothing is enforcing it, its 'self enforcing'.

In 2006 the annual tax revenue the Irish Government took in was €166bn. Shared equally amoung those in the 26 counties that would be around €40million per person in Ireland for one year. Now I realise that a capitalist state works differently than a socialist society but the basic point here is that life will get better within a socialist society. The wealth won't be collected by a Government while we do al the work and get our pittance. We will finally share in the fruits of our labour.
