Man sets himself alight during Dublin protest 16/07/2008 - 07:58:54
A man is recovering in hospital this morning after setting himself on fire during a protest at an unofficial halting site in the Coolock area of north Dublin last night.
The incident happened at around 8pm during a demonstration by members of the Travelling community on Oscar Traynor Road.
A number of protestors doused themselves with petrol and one man set himself alight.
He was rushed to Beaumont hospital with second degree burns and is said to be in a stable condition this morning.

I know that area well, hard to imagine someone on fire there. I hope he makes a big recovery.

Sad that someone has to go through these lengths to make a point. Travellers go through terrible abuse from the state and many sections of the public. They are treated as second class citizens and nobody gives a damn! Almost every halting site you go passed there are cameras watching their every move. Imagine having a Garda camera pointed at your home 24/7. How would that make you feel?

This just shows that its not just whinging* that travellers do (say, about moving on, being discriminated in bars etc), which I presume people would think, but that they actually mean it.
Travellers have the highest rate of suicide in the country, and its not for nothing.
