McCreevy urged to resign after Lisbon comments Breaking News.ie 18/06/2008 - 11:09:25
The Socialist grouping in the European Parliament is calling on Charlie McCreevy to be removed as the EU's Internal Market Commissioner.
German MEP Martin Schultz, the leader of the Socialist group, says Mr McCreevy should stand down following his comments in the run-up to the Lisbon Treaty referendum.
The former Fianna Fáil TD and government minister said a person would have to be insane to read the treaty and admitted that he had not done so himself.
Meanwhile, a group of eurosceptic MEPs led by the UK Independence Party wore jumpers bearing the slogan 'I respect the Irish Vote' during a debate on the Lisbon Treaty in the European Parliament today.
Addressing the meeting in Strasbourg, European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso said other EU member states should press ahead with ratifying the treaty, despite Ireland's vote.
Legally, the document cannot come into force without Ireland's approval and a previous attempt to introduce the same reforms as part of the EU Constitution project was abandoned after French and Dutch voters rejected it.
