I came across a flag being flown right beside a public beach in Portmarnock today. It was in a persons garden on a big flagpole. It was a full size flag and could be seen from all along the beach. The flag was one of these: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Confederate_Navy_Jack.svgA flag of the southern confederate states during the american civil war - the side that defended slavery and racism. AFAIK, this flag is used for just such a symbol of white supremacy and racism, and the c-el-tic wol-v-es can be seen with one in their camp out. I was disgusted to see such an offensive flag being flown plain to see in public. Most people here believe it to be racist: www.able2know.org/forums/about91423.htmlImagine if it were a swatstika or something, its just as bad. is there anything that can be done? - is it not a symbol of race hatred that is against the law to be shown in public? (the CW got fined for having racist material in public) As I said, its a disgrace, and shocking and offensive too. I wasnt expecting to come across some rednecks portmarnock ranch.

Don't those guys who sing 'sweet home alabama' fly that flag. Can't remember their name but a very popular song. If they're fascists I won't be singing that song again. Didn't know that was a racist flag. I'm sure Dangeresque would know all about the flag though.

Well I certainly got corrected on this one The flag was in Donabate, not Portmarnock, and its used by Cork fans during GAA matches (im supposed to know this you know.) The chap flying it is doing it for sporting purposes and not 'white supremacy'. Here's the thread: boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055310531Got threatened to get my 'Jaw Broken' and all ;D Ill keep my mout shut on such issues in future.

Some funny comments on that thread (dukes of hazard). I didn't know it was a Cork flag either!

I think the connotation relates to Cork being popularly known as the 'Rebel County'.

I think the connotation relates to Cork being popularly known as the 'Rebel County'. That's just it: context counts for a lot. They're obviously making a pun on the rebel theme, plus the flag being red, Cork's colour. back when I was an active anti-fascist, when we distributed flyers about fascist symbols, one of the pamphelts noted that in some subcultures (like rockabilly) they fly the confederate flag as a way of saying they're proud to be 'white trash', not to put down anyone else or glorify slavery. It's a world different than say, the governor of Missouri who orders the state to fly the confederate flag to commemorate the scum who died defending slavery... the very same gov who actually uses slave (prison) labour at his mansion and belongs to neo-confederate / fascist groupings.

I have noticed this in the past also comrade. Kind of a working class statement rather than a racist one. A way of saying 'we are the marginalised'.
