Starry Plough is an initiative set up in order to educate normal people about Irish Republicanism and the importance of international socialism as a grouping of Irish Republican ideology. We also endeavour to help build a wider and more solid community of republicans on the internet and use the internet as a functional and constructive tool of communication between republican groupings and international freedom organisations worldwide.
With the long war coming to ahead in Ireland and the apparent lack of support for armed struggle among the majority of normal working people, we now have a chance sit down, discuss and re-asses the republican struggle in it’s entirety, the past problems we’ve had and the future of radical republican politics.
Through the Starry Plough web site we hope to achieve the formation and organisation of a radical republican community dedicated to the formation of a 32 county Socialist Republic. A Republic based on the needs of normal working people and the end to elitist politics in Ireland.
Peace and justice for all. Tíocfaidh ár lá!

Thanks Comrade. I'm also hoping to set up an 'activst' page on the web site where people can get info on upcoming events which they can attend in order to get more involved in the Social struggle and the Republican movement in general too but I need a few days to set it up. Might be a good tool for helping to build the community too though.

Explain the star, and the hammer and sickle? ?? Also, do you want Ireland to be like the USSR was or N korea or China? The hammer and sickle signifies the Labourers (hammer) and the peasants (sickle). The red star signifies many things I believe. One is the five fingers of the workers' hands, another is the 5 social groups under socialism (the youth, the military(in defence of socialism), the labourers, the peasants, the intelligentsia(to develop revolutionary ideas) and there's a couple of other things that I can't remember off-hand. Someone else would have to field the question on the USSR although Chomsky wrote a gem on the subject of the USSR versus socialism - www.chomsky.info/articles/1986----.htm well worth a read. Socialism is supposed to make life better for the masses, to re-distribute the the wealth and nationalise (controlled by the country and it's people) our resources. For instance, the corrib gas line handed over to Shell, Loch Neagh (the largest fresh water lake in Europe) owned by some British lord. They should all be owned by the people of Ireland, not the government, not private entities in pursuit of mass profits.

I live in Chicago but was born in Kilkenny. I served in the US military and have been betrayed by the government at every turn. I'm fed up. I am new to the Socialist way of thinking but am interested. On another site there was a discussion between a Socialist and a person backing Capitalism. The Socialist was from Glasgow and the Capitalist from Venezuela. That is the 4th largest oil importer in the world. The capitalist admitted to having a lot of poverty in his country but could not justify to me his point. Why should there be poverty then??? Should the rich few have everything and people have to steal and worse to feed their babies. Does socialism have a fighting chance in the NEAR future. I, for one certainly hope so.

Welcome kat, Socialism basically hands back the means of production to the people of that country so that they can put that wealth to good use instead of into the pockets of a minority elite of capitalists. There are so many strands of socialism but if you basically believe in this basic ideal then you are a socialist. We would class ourselves republican Socialists as we do not try and sever the link beween te social struggles and the one for national unification in Ireand. Others have tried in the past to do this and failed. This website/forum was set up to be an educational tool as well as an initiative to something more,so im delighted your here, please if you have any random questions regarding socialism or irish republicanism just stick them up on the main section,it might take a day or two for someone to reply as we dont have many members but i can assure you you will get a detailed and honest response, our members here are highly knowledgeable regardiong revolutionary politics in ireland and abroad.
