In 1977 Amnesty International published a report condemning the government of the twenty-six counties for its stance on human rights. The case of Osgur Breatnach was one of the cases they mentioned, a man who was unjustly convicted of the Sallins Train Robbery. Due to concerns about events in the North, Section 31 was introduced, both republicans and Irish speakers were imprisoned and the state turned against all things Gaelic or Irish.)
