A relative of mine visited Cuba recently and on return told me about the poverty in its capital,She said they are lacking basic stuff like soap, she was hounded by locals on the street asking her if she had any soap on her,I find this disturbing,i also hate when people use this as an example why socialism/communism doesnt work.I dont know alot about Cuba so can anyone give me more info on the current situation there?

I've found it hard to find out about Cuba too, always only getting the right-wing, ‘we want our land back so we can sell it off to western investors and get rich from it’ argument, but don't forget it's a third world country and they don't get aid from anyone, except perhaps Venezuela. Socialism in western countries would work differently. As far as I know the only real exports Cuba have are Sugar, Coco. Also the American trade embargo has had a huge impact on the country. I was watching a programme on RTE a while back about Cuba. An Irish guy who had been there was really upset that they have the best doctors and nurses in the world but have no medicines to treat patients because they’re all manufactured in the US and people are in very poor health and dying needlessly because of this. He was working his arse off to lift the embargo… fair play to him. The Cuban working classes have lived in poverty since before the revolution (when it was ruled by gangsters). I don’t think you could compare socialism in Cuba to socialism in western countries. I’ve posted some links below but haven’t read through all of them (yet) so I take no responsibility for what’s on them multinationalmonitor.org/hyper/issues/1989/04/rich.htmlgroups.yahoo.com/group/CubaNews/

Oh yeah, I've seen that one before but couldn't remember the link. I think that's a pretty good site to check out. Thanks for posting the link.
