Campbell outraged at ‘tribute’ shots for INLA man
Derry Journal Tuesday 8th August 2006
East Derry MP Gregory Campbell last night demanded a full police investigation after shots were fired by a gunman during an INLA commemoration in Dungiven.
The DUP politician expressed outrage after a volley of shots was fired during the commemoration held in memory of INLA hungerstriker Kevin Lynch.
A source told the ‘Journal’ yesterday that around 16 rounds were fired from an automatic weapon during the 25th anniversary commemoration on Sunday afternoon.
Speaking to the ‘Journal’ yesterday Gregory Campbell called on the PSNI to launch a full investigation into the incident.
He said: “this is unfortunately a further escalation in what I was referring to two weeks ago when George Robinson MLA and I went to Dungiven and outlined some of the problems being faced by people in the area such as the increasing numbers of offensive flags and banners relating to the hungerstrike.
“Now unfortunately this incident means there’s been a dramatic escalation in terrorist relation intimidation in Dungiven. The weapon uses presumably belonged to the INLA and the incident requires a dedicated investigation by police.
Mr Campbell said he also hoped that police would use CCTV footage of the parade to pursue prosections in relation to the incident.
“I hope police have CCTV footage of this parade and look at it with a view to the prosection of those responsible.
“There will also be people whose names were on the notification to the Parades Commission for the parade and I hope they are pursued by police.”
However IRSP spokesperson Willie Gallagher slammed Mr Campbell’s claims that the incident represented an escalation of terrorist related intimidation as “ridiculous”.
He added: “Up to 20 rounds were fired from a machine-gun over a memorial as a tribute to INLA hungerstriker Kevin Lynch. Shots being fired in the air are nothing new and it didn’t mean anything at all.
“It was a tribute to Kevin Lynch, nothing more, nothing less.”
The PSNI issued a statement confirming that shots had been fired in the town, saying: “Police are aware that a number of shots were fired during a republican commemoration parade in Dungiven on Sunday afternoon. This is believed to have occurred after 3.40pm close to a memorial.”
