FIGHT BRITISH CRIMINALISATION OF REPUBLICAN P.O.Ws THERE ARE NOW OVER THIRTY Republican POW's currently engaged in a protest in Maghaberry prison, Co. Antrim against the British policy of criminalisation of political prisoners. They are fighting to improve conditions for segregated prisoners in Maghaberry who are in effect being punished for exercising their right to segregation from non-political prisoners. They are demanding that their five demands be addressed: 1. RIGHT TO FREE ASSOCIATION 2. END TO CONTROLLED MOVEMENT 3. RIGHT TO FULL TIME EDUCATION 4. SEPARATE VISITING FACILITY 5. RIGHT TO ORGANISE OUR OWN LANDINGS On 19 June they began to refuse food in their cells in protest at the unsanitary conditions in the cells in which they are locked up in for between 21 and 23 hours per day on alternate days. A statement issued by the OC of the CIRA prisoners in Maghaberry at the beginning of the protest said: "the protest which we now embark upon will not end until our demands are met." Good luck to the prisoners in their quest for justice. Our thoughts are with them. All we can do now is spread the word, which is a lot more important than we may think.
