Appeal to support youth group in Balata refugee camp
Kievan Jackson, a member of the Cork branch of the IPSC, is involved in
organizing a visit to Ireland and Britain by a youth group from
Balata refugee camp in Nablus.
Last year, Kievan bravely took on the task of raising funds to support
an earlier visit by this group. He succeeded and, now, he has asked me
to send, to IPSC members, the following appeal for funds to support
another visit next month.

Support the "A'edoon" dance and drama youth troupe
to return to Ireland, Wales and London this August!
With a new performance, "Let us speak!", 14 young Palestinian performers from
Balata refugee camp will participate in the Belfast, Derry and South Armagh
festivals, before spending two weeks in London participating in an exchange with
a Colombian refugee arts collective.
"Let us speak" tells stories from the young performers' own
lives - of checkpoints and school, invasions and family, martyrs and friends.
The theatre will be fused with Palestinian dancing and film produced
by the children themselves.
Despite several groups co-operating to bring the Balata group out, we are still
short on money. We have raised some through fundraisers and grants, but face a
short-fall that could stop the tour taking place. The entire budget totals well
over £10,000, including flights from Jordan to London and onwards to Ireland.
Any help or ideas would be immensely useful - bank details follow below.
Last summer, the A'edoon performers took Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England by
storm with "We will Return", with rave reviews and standing ovations at each of
the 14 performances. The tour gave the children space away from poverty,
occupation and oppression. Days off were spent caving, ice-skating and at the
beach - all impossible while in Palestine.
Performing outside Palestine empowers the children by making their voices heard
and giving them recognition for their creativity. As the situation in Palestine
disintegrates further with economic and political blockades, Balata residents
feel ever more cut off from the outside world. Performing abroad gave the group
an active role in boosting their self-esteem and breaking the isolation that
surrounds them while in Balata.
The cultural interaction of the tour enables the children to make valuable
connections with people outside of Palestine. The visits to Belfast and Derry in
particular left the children feeling supported, with new friendships and a
feeling of shared struggle. This summer's visit to Ireland aims to deepen these
relationships.
Ireland will be followed by two weeks of intensive workshops and showcasing
dance, theatre, music, visual arts and film in London. The Balata children will
be hosted by Nueva Generacion, an inspiring Latin American collective composed
largely of young Colombian refugees. Together the young performers and artists
will explore the possibilities of art as a tool for political change.

Donations to any of the following accounts would be extremely useful
in making this tour possible and giving the kids an experience of a lifetime.
Please email info@balatacamp.net if you make a donation, so that we can keep
track of which finances are intended for the tour. The high costs are a result
of the occupation - flights from Jordan cost £500 for each performer. Flights
from the Israeli airport at Tel Aviv are half the price - but Palestinians are
not allowed to use it.
