Hey all, like the title would suggest, I'm looking for some information on Saor Éire, a group of Communists who split from the IRA, for my history topic. I haven't had much luck so far, the Wiki doesn't provide much information on them... Maybe you guys could help? Thanks

Hey all, like the title would suggest, I'm looking for some information on Saor Éire, a group of Communists who split from the IRA, for my history topic. I haven't had much luck so far, the Wiki doesn't provide much information on them... Maybe you guys could help? Thanks As far as I know, off hand, there were 2 different Saor Éire organisations and were in no way connected. One operated in the 20s or 30s. Who were actually part of the IRA and actually had IRA backing. They were denounced by Fianna Fail and the Catholic Church as a dangerous communist organisation. The other org operated in the late 60s. Here's some from WikipediaSaor Éire (meaning Free Ireland) was a left-wing political organisation established in September 1931 by communist-leaning members of the Irish Republican Army, with the backing of the IRA leadership. Notable among its founders was Peadar O'Donnell, former editor of An Phoblacht and a leading left-wing figure in the IRA. Saor Éire described itself as "an organization of workers and working farmers".
The organisation was attacked by the right-wing press and the Catholic Church as a dangerous communist group, and was quickly banned by the Free State government. The strength of reaction against it prevented it becoming an effective political organisation. O'Donnell and his supporters would attempt a similar initiative two years later with the establishment of the Republic Congress in 1933.
In later years Fianna Fáil accused Clann na Poblachta of being a revival of Saor Éire and name itself was used by dissident leftist republicans - some of whom were later associated with the Maoist-inspired INLA - in the late 1960s.I think Wikipedia put it better than me ;D

More from a different source
Saor Éire (Saor Éire is an Irish term for 'Free Ireland'.)
Initially established in Sept 1931 as a left-wing Republican group. It was banned on 17th Oct 1931. The group reappeared in 1967 as a minor Republican paramilitary group which was active in the 1960s and 1970s, when it was believed to be involved in bank robberies in the Republic of Ireland.
Saor Éire was reformed in 1967 by members of the Irish Republican Army, one of whom was Frank Keane the former head of the IRA Dublin Brigade, it was believed to have around between forty and sixty members of whom the majority were based in Dublin and Cork.
In 1975 Saor Eire made threats against both the Irish Republican Socialist Party (IRSP) and the Official Irish Republican Army (OIRA) at a time when both organisations were engaged in a feud in Belfast.
And more from an even different source
The two organisations using the name Saor Eire were not in any way connected. The first was a kind of political movement established by the IRA. The second was a minor paramilitary group which appeared to be influenced by a distorted version of Trotskyism. The two organisations were seperated by more than thirty years and as far as I know the second group did not claim to be a revival of the first. --IrrationallyAngry 04:44, 18 Apr 2005 (IST)
