C.S. Gas used in North Belfast
The IRSP in North Belfast have condemned recent C.S. gas attacks
against local residents in Cliftonpark Avenue and Parkside in the past
week, in both incidents children as young as two were affected by the gas.
North Belfast representative Paul Little after speaking to residents
in both areas said;
"We have advised all residents affected by this thuggish behaviour
from the PSNI/RUC to seek legal advice and make a complaint to the
police ombudsman, what is clear is that the so-called new start for
policing is little more than a farce and for most residents of working
class interface communities it is the same old story.
The PSNI/RUC have no respect working class communities, they have
demonstrated this by their actions over recent days. We also note that
during the incident in Cliftonpark Avenue yesterday (Tuesday) a 14
year old youth already suffering from the effects of the C.S. gas was
put into the back of a police land rover and driven along Cliftonpark
Avenue in to the loyalist Lower Oldpark area where they tried to make
him get out placing his life at risk from sectarian attack just yards
from where young Niall Ferrin was nearly murdered in a sectarian
attack just weeks ago. The youth refused to get out of the land rover
and the PSNI/RUC eventually brought him back to the nationalist side
of the interface."
In conclusion the IRSP representative said;
"All police personnel involved in these incidents should be suspended
immediately if not sacked! Those local political parties who support
the PSNI need to be explaining to local residents why they believe
such brutish behaviour by the police should be deemed as acceptable
behaviour.
Whilst such incidents continue to occur and there is no action taken
by the police authorities to rein in these thugs in uniform and begin
to demonstrate that they have some understanding of the difficulties
faced by residents in interface communities they will continue to have
little or no support in these communities. Residents require respect
not the baton and C.S. gas."
