1. Message From Róisín
A Chairde / Dear Friends
I would firstly like to thank my good friends, John and Michaela, for taking the initiative and setting up www.friendsofroisinmcaliskey.info. Their www skills and expertise are greatly appreciated as is the support of all those who have sent emails through the website, or have printed and posted the letters. I am aware that many people have also emailed and written letters independent of the site and again I welcome the initiative and support.
The purpose of the site is to ensure you all have accurate and current information, and as the campaign builds that you can see what others are doing as well. The site content is a team effort led by my family, close friends and legal team. Please let us know what works best to help you.
Those of you who know me personally will be aware that while I have been open about my experiences I value the privacy to which my family are entitled. I wish to maintain that privacy in so far as it is possible and to ensure security and enjoyment of life for my children.
Go raibh mile maith agaibh,
With thanks,
Róisín
2. Update On Court Proceedings
On Wednesday 27th June, Judge Burgess further adjourned proceedings until Wednesday 22 August 2007, on which date he will again review the progress made by both the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), who represent Germany in the matter, and our own legal team, in preparing their respective cases.
Judge Burgess recognised the significant progress made by Róisín’s team. He reminded the CPS that he had directed them in open court to produce ‘a full chronology’ (time-line) of the Warrant from October 2006 to May 2007.
We expect that a date for the substantive hearing of the case will be set on August 22nd for some time in September 2007.
Judge Burgess has again stated that there is no requirement for Róisín to attend on the 22nd August as these are administrative review hearings. This is a welcome contrast to the insistence of CPS in the London hearings of 1996/97, which forced her to appear repeatedly at court, in a wheelchair.
Peter Corrigan, Róisín’s lawyer, has agreed to provide an outline of the case for the next newsletter.
3. Update: Addition to website information
The website is a shared voluntary effort, and we appreciate your advice, enquiries, and submissions.
As some of you have suggested, we will collapse the ‘background’ and ‘current situation’ pages into one page, and make space for campaign information and messages of support from you all.
It is our intention to keep the site updated and to release the newsletter fortnightly, unless changing circumstances require a more regular publication.
4. Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q's)
What is the new Extradition Act (2003)?
Some people have asked for an explanation of how the new Extradition Act (2003) and European Arrest Warrant are different from the old extradition procedures, and how this change in context affects Róisín’s case.
We have asked a friendly expert to provide a lay person’s guide a.s.a.p.
Bear with us!
Why seek independent representation for Róisín’s children?
There has been some concern as to why Róisín’s children are seeking independent representation in the matter. Children have independent rights protected under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).
It is our belief that the abuse of the Extradition Act (2003) and the European Arrest Warrant process not only violate Róisín’s rights but also the rights of her children to privacy and security of family life.
Róisín is the parent and primary carer of her children. These children are threatened with the physical and emotional loss of that parent without just cause, carrying the trauma of this saga into a third generation of the family.
What kind of campaigning is helpful?
Lots of you have asked if the campaign is intentionally low-key. The reality is that anything that follows the enormity and trauma of the first campaign must appear low key.
Activity that highlights the case and that is lawful and non-threatening to the rights and security of those involved and /or other persons is welcome.
Let us know what it is you are doing, thinking of doing, or have done already.
If you can add a link from your website to ours, that would be good.
Is financial support required?
We are, as ever, grateful to the seasoned Rights campaigners for their reminders that campaigns need resources.
Thankfully the current situation is not the crisis of 1997, when a pregnant and ill, Róisín was incarcerated in Holloway and then Belmarsh Prison. We have not been required to produce £100,000 in cash and surety in bail, and we do not have to travel constantly between home and England.
Inevitably, there will be additional financial pressures and campaign requirements, as many of you have pointed out, and practical help is welcome. Our thanks to those who have already contributed towards meeting those needs.
To ensure accountability and transparency we intend to open a campaign fund and will post the bank account details on the website in the near future.
Many thanks for signing up to receive Campaign News from www.friendsofroisinmcaliskey.info
Please distribute this information as widely as possible and encourage family, friends and colleagues to visit the site, join the campaign and stay informed.
