RSYM Seamus Costello Commemoration Statement

Republican Socialist Youth Movement – www.rsym.org
A chairde,
These are difficult times for Republicanism and for our movement. The Good Friday Agreement was a settlement which fell far short of the goals our movement and general Republican objectives. The continued growth of the Republican Socialist Movement and the foundation of the youth movement one year ago is testament to our increasing ability and strength. It is essential we build the ranks of the revolutionary party, educate and train our membership and prepare for the coming revolutionary storms. It is only by doing this, as Ta Power says, that we will make it.
Behind the guise of the Celtic Tiger and the work the Criminal Assets Bureau do to cover the true nature of the state, we see inner-city working class areas desolate with no proper social planning or facilities for young people. Assets recovered from drug dealers are not rightfully channeled into the working class communities suffering from addiction and anti-social behavior. The drug dealers get off the hook, while the working class pay for a crises not of their making.
At this time we remember the Republican and political prisoners held in British and Freestate prisons. Especially those currently on protest in Maghaberry against the draconian conditions they face daily. We send greetings to all Republican POWs and remember your continueing sacrifices with pride. The Five Demands of 1981 are all but something of the past for our comrades in prison, Republican prisoners are no less criminals now than they were 25 years ago. The teaching of Irish history remains the same today as it was for Thomas Ashe in 1917 and Michael Devine in 1981.
Our sympathy is with the family of 20-year-old Terence Wheelock murdered by the Garda in Dublin, the murder of Terence is indicative of the nature of the state for Republicans who daily face harassment the implications are massive. Terence is just one of six murdered by the Garda in recent times while in custody, each time the Gardai and politicians at the highest levels, including Bertie Ahern attempt cover their atrocious record with lies and false promises.
The IRSP and the wider Republican family are no strangers to the behavior of the Garda. The special branch in their present form continue the work of the “Heavy Gang” of the 1970s by harassing, intimidating and assaulting prominent anti-Good Friday Agreement Republicans on a regular basis. In the cases of Ronan McLoughlin and John Morris, murder is the only suitable term. Just as our day will come, theirs will also.
