Damascus, 14 Jan. (AKI) -
Several factions from the Palestinian Liberation Organization will not participate in a conference on the Middle East backed by the Syrian government to take place in Damascus on January 23.
Sources from the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, led by Nayef Hawatmeh, have told Adnkronos International (AKI) that the front will not take part in the meeting that will include Hamas and other Palestinian groups.
The meeting, an alternative to the US sponsored Middle East summit held in Annapolis in November, is expected to seek a "radicalisation of Palestinian branches" in a bid " to form an alternative PLO".
At the same time, sources from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, led by George Habash, told AKI that the movement will refuse to participate in light of the "ideological and strategic differences with Hamas and other factions".
They said the front "is convinced that a similar conference should take place with the patronage of the PLO and with an active and consistent participation of the Palestinian National Authority and the Fatah movement".
The Party of the Palestinian People of Bassam al-Salihi, also refuses to participate in the conference as a sign of "loyalty to the PLO as the only framework in which everyone can be united".
Rival factions of the Palestinian National Authority with a seat in Damascus, including Hamas, the Islamic Jihad and the Popular-Comando General Front , had called for a national Palestinian conference entitled, "Faith in National Rights", in opposition to the Annapolis conference.
But the meeting has been postponed many times at the request of Syria, which is expected to host the event.
