Has anyone asked the question, why are the Government cutting social welfare, cutting special needs funding, cutting plenty of other things when they could take it out of the 26bn euro fund run by the National Treasury Management Agency?
Why did they even bother spending money on commissioning the McCarthy report (AKA An Bord Snip Nua)? As far as I know McCarthy is getting E500,000 a year, plus the salaries of the other 'economists' they use. Sounds like just another waste of money to me. Although I'd expect nothing less from our capitalist ruling Government.

Vincent Browne was on the radio there a few days ago on the George Hook show. he said something like those earning 80,000 or more are paying 27% income tax, and that if this tax was raised by 10% then that would raise a couple of billion. A good suggestion that. If you were a 'right' thinking economist then I guess cutting welfare is just part of correcting the market. But arnt Markets supposed to be self correcting? What is this euro fund your talking about? what is it used for?

It is a reserve fund of over 26bn euro which is being kept for a 'rainy day'. I'd say under EU rules they have to have it. It was all over the papers at the end of 2008.
Many billionaires don't pay tax at all. There was an article written by McCanno (Eamon McCann) about how U2 don't pay tax in Ireland and that is why they were living here. They may not be billionaires but they are very wealthy people. They have since left Ireland, once again, to avoid paying tax. The cheek of them. 80,000 is a small amount compared to what some of the feckers are earning. The author of An Bord Snip Nua is on e500,000, top bankers have had their salaries capped at e500,000, Brian Cowen is making over e330,000 basic salary, plus expenses, plus travel expenses, drivers, make-up (a la Bertie) there are plenty more. The guys on 80,000 are small potatoes compared to these feckers.
