Was he not paid by the Government? The problem with people like Joe Higgins being elected as TDs is that it creates confidence in the Governmental system by having 'people friendly' faces/ representatives in Government regardless of how much pay they accept, they still put a good face on a horrible institution = reactionary. This does nothing for the cause of the Socialist Republic. People like Joe Higgins could do better by getting elected then leaving their seat empty and pay cheque at the door claiming Government is an insult to working people and it must be destroyed. The fact that he is elected shows his views are supported by the people. There is WAY too much support for the Governmental system in this country. Take it from Comrade Seamus Costello: 'and I don't see why with a few TDs and a few MPs we can't destroy these institutions and bring them crumbling down in ruins' I used to think Joe was quite a good speaker in general. Though iv kind of gone off him having seen him on the vincent Browne show. He's not very good at explaining socialism and repeats the nonsense of blaming "the banks" or "bankers". This economic crisis is not the "fault" of the banks, its a fault in the system as a whole. They are very idealist the sort of arguments iv heard him putting forth.

Good point comrade. I agree. I think blaming the banks is an awfully reactionary thing to do especially when he is (in some way) part of the body that allows the banks to operate. He is in a good position to cause some damage, so why doesn't he? Is this the slow process of nomalising Governmental rule that has begun? Is Joe a part of it?

Just listening to the speech by RBB at the Palestinian demonstration, all those groupings are appart of it!!! Theyv replaced the church! Its something about them. Fluffy! talk.

Joe Higgins was never part of the government - there is no debate on the matter. The Dáil is not the government. Also, is Costello not also a reactionary for being an opponent of abstentionism and standing for election to the Dáil in 1977?
Abstentionism to ruin confidence in governement is only possible when the objective conditions exist. At present, Ireland is an imperialist country with a parasitic imperial economy, it is a miracle Higgins even got elected in the first place.
